D23 Expo Preview: Pixar's Inside Out From the Director of "Up"

Every year, Disney holds what's basically its own Comic-Con: the Disney's D23 Expo. The studio uses it as a favorable time to present previews and unleash a torrent of news across its entire line of properties. On Friday, it delved into its animation slate — and the unquestionable highlight was a look at a new film from Pixar.

Pixar's Inside Out Film

The long-untitled film from director Pete Docter (Creative Creation from the Director of Up and Monster's, Inc.) and producer Jonas Rivera (Up) has a name -- Inside Out. The film features and takes place within the mind of an 11-year-old girl named Riley whose life is turned upside down when she has to relocate to San Francisco. But as the director pointed out, Riley isn't just the lead character of the film; she's also the setting. The movie takes place largely inside her mind, several emotions dominate Riley's brain, including Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Sadness (Phyllis Smith) and Fear (Bill Hader).

The film also allows Pixar's artists to innovative and imaginative in other areas of the brain such as Imaginationland (which looked very Disney-like), the Picasso-like Abstract Thought area and the Train of Thought that connects the brain worlds and which was quite literally a train. Inside Out opens June 15th 2015.

First 34-Sec Footage From Disney's Big Hero 6 Animated Film

Walt Disney Animation Studios has released fans at D23 Expo with a first look at the story, concept art and a brief sizzle reel from their upcoming animated Marvel Comics adaptation Big Hero 6.

First 34-Sec Footage From Disney's Big Hero 6 Animated Film

Director Don Hall previewed Disney Animation’s 2014 release Big Hero 6, Set in "San Fransokyo" -- a mix of San Francisco and Toyko -- it is the story of 14-year-old tech wiz and his team, including a robot, Baymax; as well as Gogo, Honey Lemon, sushi chef Wasabi and fanboy Fred. Hiro's best buddy is a robot named Baymax, whose look Hall says was inspired by actual inflatable, cuddlier robots that Japanese scientists are developing.

Disney's concept art and comic book panel-style footage definitely put the emphasis on the film being an action comedy for a broad, general audience. What was curious, though, was that while Hall mentioned the film was based on a Marvel comic, Marvel's logo and name itself was conspicuously absent from much of the footage and title logos.

The CG-animated Big Hero 6 hits theaters in 3D on Nov. 7, 2014.

Monsters University: Pictures Of Honorable Teachers And Students

It's really amazing how Pixar Animation Studio is able to produce some unimaginable and funny creatures in their "Monsters" film series. Now it's time to check it out Pixar's and this year's most anticipated animated feature film "Monster University" which is slated for release on June 21st, 2013, pictures of outstanding students and honorable teachers.

Place mouse pointer on picture to read more about each character.

Peter Sohn as Scott "Squishy" Squibbles - Student

Scott Squibbles gives new meaning to the term “undeclared.” A sophomore whose dream of becoming a Scarer was squashed in his first year at Monsters University, “Squishy” is a bit of a wide-eyed wanderer—small, sweet, naïve and quiet—who, not surprisingly, still lives with his doting mother. But with a little help from his Oozma Kappa brothers, Squishy begins to realize he’s more than just that shy monster in the corner.

Helen Mirren as Dean Hardscrabble

To Dean Hardscrabble, there are scary monsters and there are all other monsters. It’s no surprise she feels this way—she is, after all, a legendary Scarer and Dean of the School of Scaring at Monsters University. Aspiring Scare students must be up for the challenge to impress her, though she is convinced that her assessment of who is truly scary and who is not is never wrong.

Alfred Molina as Professor Knight

Professor Knight teaches Scaring 101, the introductory course to Scaring at Monsters University. With hundreds of new Scare students each year, Professor Knight must weed out the weak from the talented and identify who shows the most potential to be real Scarers. Only a few have what it takes to pass the formidable final exam and move on to the elite Scaring Program.

Tyler Labine as Brock Pearson

This preppy-looking fraternity monster has been chosen to assist the Greek Council president in emceeing the school’s annual Scare Games. Jock-like and what some might refer to as a “meathead,” Brock is a loud, enthusiastic emcee who relishes the danger of the Scare Games’ challenges.

Sean Hayes as Terri Perry & Dave Foley as Terry Perry

When it comes to Terri and Terry, it’s hard not to ask, “Are two heads really better than one?” These bickering brothers have little in common: Terri with an “i” is a real romantic who’s quick to spot the silver lining in any situation, while older brother Terry with a “y” sports a more cynical outlook on life. If they can stop squabbling long enough to work with their Oozma Kappa brothers—they might be able to put their heads together—literally—and find their place in Monsters University’s Scare Program once and for all.

Monsters University: Monstrously Funny Students & Cast Members

"Monsters University" is an upcoming 2013 3D computer-animated buddy-comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures Dan Scanlon is the director and Kori Rae is the producer.

For the 2001 comedy "Monsters, Inc." Pixar Animation Studios devised all manner of squishy, creepy, cuddly, fuzzy, wobbly creatures to populate that tale of monsters who harness the energy of human screams to power their city. Now, the film’s prequel, "Monsters University," opening June 21, takes its familiar lead characters — the short, green, one-eyed Mike and his tall, furry sidekick, Sully, back to school.

Monsters University Character Banner

These creatures of the night emerge to frighten and feed off their victims: young children who tell their skeptical parents that ghosts and goblins lurk in their closets. The kids are right. Those monsters are not a figment of infant fears; they are a race of ogres from an alternative world whose only energy source is a high volume of audible nightmares. Let's look at the Pixar Animation Studio's 10 monstrously funny creatures and characters.

Place mouse pointer on picture to read more about each character.

Billy Crystal as Michael "Mike" Wazowski - Student

Mike Wazowski’s lifelong dream is to become a Scarer at Monsters, Inc.—and he’s sure he knows just how to do it. Ever since he was a young monster, Mike’s had his eye on Monsters University, home of the world’s top Scare Program. Now a freshman and hopeful Scare student, he’s well versed in the rich history, theory and technique required to reach his goal, and the little green one-eyed monster has more confidence, enthusiasm, determination and heart than all of his classmates combined. But unexpected roadblocks derail Mike’s plans and he’s forced to team up with a group of misfit monsters and an unlikely ally to give it the old college try and pull off the biggest coup in the University’s history.

John Goodman as James P. "Sulley" Sullivan - Student

When it comes to Scaring, Sulley’s a natural—his abundant size, fierce roar and family legacy of a long line of high-achieving Scarers make him a shoo-in for the esteemed Scare Program at Monsters University. But from the moment the overly confident monster steps his big furry feet on campus, it’s clear he’d rather crack jokes than books—and he learns the hard way that his unfettered talent and family ties can only get him so far. With his ego bruised and future in jeopardy, a stubborn Sulley must put his pride aside, team up with an odd bunch of misfit monsters and actually work if he wants to live up to his true Scaring potential.

Steve Buscemi as Randall "Randy" Boggs - Student

Monsters University freshman Randy Boggs has big aspirations for college life. The peculiar lizard-like monster with his host of gangly arms and legs plans to major in Scaring and lead an active social life filled with fun, friends and fraternity parties. If only he could get his embarrassing disappearing habit under control, he’d be good to go, because how is he ever going to be a great Scarer if nobody can see him?

Charlie Day as Art - Student

The ultimate free spirit, Art is a mysterious monster with a questionable background. By far the strangest member of the Oozma Kappas, Art bowls over the competition—sometimes literally—with his unique dexterity and wild-card ways. Nothing is scarier than the unpredictable, especially when it comes to this furry ball of bad.

Joel Murray as Don Carlton -Student

Faced with the realities of the economic downturn, Midwestern sales monster Don Carlton finds himself going back to school to learn new skills and pursue a dream career in Scaring. One of Monsters University’s “mature” students and a founding member of the Oozma Kappa fraternity, Don brings his honest hardworking spirit to their endeavors, ensuring that his fellow brothers keep their various heads on straight and their array of eyes on the task at hands.
