After 4 long years, finally Academy Award-winning filmmaker James Cameron (latest collaborations with 20th Century Fox, a relationship that spans nearly 30 years and marks one of the most successful filmmaker-studio alliances in motion picture history.) and 20th Century Fox  officially confirmed today that they are moving ahead with "Avatar" sequels which has been upped from two to three films. 

The three films will be filmed simultaneously with production beginning next year. The release of the first sequel will be in December 2016, with the second to follow in December 2017, and the third a year later. Avatar 2, 3, and 4 will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment banner. Like the original film, Lightstorm will work with Joe Letteri and his team at WETA Digital to realize the worlds of the sequels.

Cameron has hired screenwriters Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planets of the Apes), and Shane Salerno (Savages, Salinger) to collaborate with him on the screenplays for the three films.

Commented Cameron: "Building upon the world we created with Avatar has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience. In writing the new films, I've come to realize that Avatar's world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen. And to help me continue to expand this universe, I'm pleased to bring aboard Amanda, Rick, Shane and Josh -- all writers I've long admired -­ to join me in completing the films screenplays."

Avatar  is the highest grossing film at the domestic and worldwide box office having earned more than $760 million domestically and $2.7 billion worldwide. The film won Golden Globe awards for Best Motion Picture and Best Director; and was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won Oscars for art direction, visual effects and cinematography.

Avatar was written by Cameron from an idea he nurtured for over a decade, while working on the technology necessary to realize its wholly imagined world. Working with WETA Digital, Cameron created a fully immersive 3D cinematic experience of a new kind, where revolutionary technology that was invented to make the film disappeared into the emotion of the characters and the epic nature of the story.

What is a Black Hole? What is a Wormhole?  What is the difference between a Black Hole and a Wormhole in outer space? There are so many unanswered questions regarding these concepts. So before we even begin with this film list, I would like to explain few theories related to these holes.

Black holes are places where ordinary gravity has become so extreme that it overwhelms all other forces in the Universe. Once inside, nothing can escape a black hole's gravity — not even light can exit the event horizon.

Wormholes are still theoretical / fictional. They would be tears in 2 locations of our universe with a 'tunnel' of sorts between them. If the wormhole was large enough, you would be able to go from one end to the other through the tunnel, bypassing all the distance in between.

There is always been a lot of curiosity regarding black holes and wormholes in outer space and several movies have been made over the years with black holes central to the theme. The next years most anticipated and upcoming film of Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" is theoretically based on black holes, wormholes and time travel too. So this gives us a lot more reasons to know and be well prepared to understand "Insterstellar". Now let's begin with our list of films based on black holes and worm holes.

10. Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005)

*** A Wonderful Out Space Family Adventure ***

Open up your imagination to the world of Zathura. Kids and adults alike will revel in this great story about two young brothers who find an old board-style game called Zathura that literally launches them and their home into outer-space. Danny and Walter are the brothers and when their father leaves them alone with their teenage sister for a few minutes, worlds collide and their home becomes a space-bound asteroid, but not because of any interstellar cataclysm. It's all related to the game Zathura that the younger Danny finds and begins playing.

"Zathura" is a unique family film that provides strong moral lessons on the value and importance of family. It also demonstrates the advantages of working together to solve problems. I believe children are going to love this movie and adults will enjoy it just as much for the way it brings back feelings of juvenile fantasy.

9. Wristcutters: A Love Story (2006)

*** A Captivating Journey Into Surrealism ***

The clever and imaginative comedy "Wristcutters: A Love Story," written and directed by Goran Dukic, takes place in a world populated entirely by people who've committed suicide, a land that has everything the living world has to offer, apparently, except a sky full of stars and cell phone reception. And, oh yea, there's a black hole under the passenger seat of the rusted-out orange station wagon our intrepid characters are riding in. 

The movie end with a happy note, maybe it's just too happy and a little bit dreamy (I would say). But as I said, it does actually stay true to its title. A word "A Love Story", I don't see any point of making it a sad story at all. So if you are somebody who likes romantic-comedy with a little of twist and a lot of heart inside, then this one is definitely a movie for you.

8. Galaxy Quest (1999)

*** Great fun for Trekkers and non-believers alike! ***

"Galaxy Quest" stands both as one of the most well-crafted and witty comedies in recent years as well as a grand space adventure with amazing special effects that have held up quite well (with the possible exceptions of the CGI baby aliens on the desert world).

The acting is top-notch, (Tim Allen plays the scene-stealing hack down to the last detail, Sigourney Weaver is hilarious as the token female on the ship, Alan Rickman adds wonderful conflict as a furious Shakespearian actor who is convinced his role on the show ruined his career) the special effects are just fabulous, and the few poignant moments are done so well that it's damn near tear-jerking. Do yourself a favor and buy this movie. Don't even rent it first, just buy it!

7. Treasure Planet (2002)

*** Best Disney Movie You've Never Seen ***

This was truly brilliant. While watching the ending scene, I was internally asking Disney why they don't make films that are this good anymore. Please, Disney. Bring back the old magic.

Jim is a young boy, who dreams of adventures. He somehow obtains a map that leads to a place that's full of riches untold. He becomes a cabin boy in a space galleon and sets sail with the rest of the alien crew towards Treasure Planet. Aboard the ship, he befriends a cyborg, John Silver. Unbeknown to Jim, his friend is actually a pirate with a greedy scheme on his mind.

Disney shorted promotion of the film and the intended audience never really found out about it. Why this is so remains a mystery. There were rumors that the two producers got into an argument with Eisner who is notoriously vindictive. The only other possible reason is that the film is that it's aimed more for boys than girls.

6. The Black Hole (1979)

*** A Journey Begins Where Everything Else Ends ***

Did you ever have one of those mutant pets, like a cat with six toes on its front paws, or an extra ear? Well I didn't either, but you can imagine what it must be like. You'd love the thing all the more because of its flaws, because it'll never be perfect, and because it needs someone to love it. And such is my love for "The Black Hole" (1979). It is an interesting story that is rendered and explored in a mechanical manner--although visually, in terms of its set design and special effects, it is really stunning. 

In a certain way you might say I love/hate the movie. The methodical way it's constructed seems lifeless. But at the same time, it is a strange joy to see its methodical construction. It takes tremendous energy to create something so controlled. It's certainly not a film made by accident or unconsciously.

"The Black Hole," manages to be strangely trance-inducing. Once I put it on, it's hard to turn it off.

What we do know is that Watch Dogs won’t necessarily be a straight adaptation of the video game, as Ubisoft Motion Picture CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet claimed that a ‘brand new story’ will be created for the Watch Dogs movie.

9. Shovel Ready (TBA)

"Shovel Ready" is an upcoming sci-fi thriller starring Denzel Washington. Shovel Ready is an adaptation of the forthcoming 2014 novel by New York Times Magazine culture editor Adam Sternbergh. The sci-fi thriller will is produced by Erwin Stoff who was also co-responsible for The Matrix which redefined the sci-fi thriller.

"The story centers on a hitman (Denzel Washington ) who chooses to protect a young woman instead of killing her. The dystopian cyberpunk thriller takes place in a society where citizens escape from the gruesomeness of everyday life by entering into a virtual reality."

8. Pure (2015)

"Pure" is an upcoming post-apocalyptic drama based on the eponymous YA novel by Julianna Baggott, which is part of a planned trilogy. 

"The story describes how humanity is divided into two camps: the Pures and the Wretches. While the latter live in the ashes of the old world, mostly disfigured, the former live inside the Dome, which protects them of the dangers of the outside. When Partridge, a Pure leaves this refuge to search for his mother, his path crosses with that of a 16-year-old pressia, a Wretch. For both nothing will ever be the same…"

7. Y: The Last Man (2015)

"Y: The Last Man" is based on what is described as one of the most influential and brilliant comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. The decade long development of this project seems to finally be coming to fruition with New Line Cinema moves it to the top of their priority list. The studio brought Jericho writers Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia on board to finish the screenplay and is currently shopping around for a director.

"The storyline follows young amateur escape artist Yorrick Brown and his Capuchin monkey, the only male survivors of a plague that simultaneously kills every mammal on earth who possesses a Y chromosome."

6. Metro 2033 (TBA)

"Metro 2033" is an upcoming post-apocalyptic thriller based on the eponymous novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky. It is the foundation of the video game of the same name.

"Metro 2033" tells the story of Artyom, a young man living in the Moscow metro system, which functions as humanity’s last refuge against the threats from of a now hostile Planet Earth. We had a tough time getting excited about many of the films released in 2012. Apparently, many of you felt the same way. The amount of action, adventure and Sci-fi films releasing in 2013 is just enormous compared to 2012. There will be plenty of superheroes flying around next year with some visually extraordinary CGI works. We have already seen 10 Most Anticipated Action Adventure Movies of 2013. 

To add further to this genre we thought of producing another set of upcoming action adventure films that will be hitting the theaters next year. Watch latest trailers and enjoy every bit of excitement it offers.

1. Oblivion (2013)

As the film’s tagline says, "Earth is a memory worth fighting for.”

Universal Pictures's "Oblivion" starring Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Morgan Freeman, Melissa Leo, Zoë Bell and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.  It is a science fiction thriller film based on the Radical Comics graphic novel of the same name by "Torn: Legacy (2010)" Joseph Kosinski and directed and co-produced by Joseph Kosinski. Filming was done using Sony's newly-developed special CineAlta F65 camera. The film focuses on  a veteran soldier who is sent to a distant planet, where he has to destroy the remains of an alien race. The arrival of an unexpected traveler causes him to question what he knows about the planet, his mission, and himself. 

The visually-stylish trailer, released via Apple Trailers, the set-up seems slightly similar to M. Night Shyamalan's "After Earth" with a hostile planet that humanity has been abandoned.

2. After Earth (2013)

Cast: Will Smith, Jaden Smith and Isabelle Fuhrman.

Columbia Pictures's "After Earth" starring Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Isabelle Fuhrman, Zoë Kravitz and Kristofer Hivju. The film is written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. His previous film "The Last Airbender (2010)" was a notable box office failure. The first feature film shot using Sony F65 digital camera, as well as M. Night Shyamalan's first digital film.

The trailer for "After Earth" has finally been released worldwide. Once again Will Smith joins with his young son Jaden as a father and son fighting the realities of life. The official trailer sequences explains that the pair's flight vehicle is damaged while traversing the universe causing them to crash land on Earth, that was evacuated by humans 1,000 years earlier. As Cypher (Will Smith) is injured at the craft, Kitai (Jaden Smith) is forced to navigate the alien land to save them both. Sounds interesting? It looks it too.

3. Pacific Rim (2013)

Cast: Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi.

Warner Bros. Pictures's "Pacific Rim" is a much awaited science fiction action film directed by "Pan's Labyrinth (2006)" Guillermo del Toro based on a screenplay by Travis Beacham. The film starring Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman and Diego Klattenhoff. Tom Cruise was considered for a role, but in the end, Idris Elba was cast.

The film revolves around a world where soldiers piloting giant robots battle against giant sea monsters who have mysteriously risen from beneath the ocean. The film will be an homage to Japanese giant monster films, known as "Kaiju" worldwide. Del Toro has said the film will be "a beautiful poem to giant monsters". The film will be released in IMAX 3-D.

4. Ender's Game (2013)

It is an action-science fiction film based on the multi-award winning novel Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card. 5. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013)

Sony Pictures Entertainment's "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" is an upcoming action adventure fantasy film based on the 2007 bestselling young-adult fantasy trilogy by Cassandra Clare. Directed by Harald Zwart, it stars Lena Headey, Lily Collins, Kevin Zegers, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jemima West, Jamie Campbell Bower and Robert Sheehan.

The film follows a teenager Clary Fray, who learns she is a descendent of clandestine order of half-angel warriors called Shadowhunters who protect the world from demons. Clary joins forces with fellow Shadowhunters Jace Weyland and siblings Alec and Isabelle Lightwood on a quest to rescue her mother  from the evil Shadowhunter Valentine. Not to worry, the first trailer for the film doesn't really reveal much about the story line, instead focusing on the film's action, while dropping the word "demon" a couple times.

In 2013 will once again be filled with technically sound, sequels, Extra ordinary CGI work, reboots, remakes and films based on adventure novels . In action adventure genre, Robert Downey, Jr. Will reprise his role as billionaire Tony Stark and a technologically advanced superhero in Iron Man 3.

With Iron man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America sequel releasing in the near future, we could expect "The Avengers" sequel by the end of 2014.

 

8. The Wolverine (2013)

"The Wolverine" is an upcoming superhero film featuring a Marvel comic book character Wolverine and it's the sixth film in the X- Men film franchise, directed by James Mangold. Hugh Jackman returns as Logan "The Wolverine". Including his cameo in X-Men: First Class, this will be Jackman's sixth portrayal of Logan/Wolverine, breaking his own record. The initial promos, pictures and behind the scene videos looks stunning. There's plenty of actions to expect from this one.

 

7. G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)

"G. I. Joe: Retaliation" is a sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009). It's a complete action thriller movie directed by Jon Chu. This is Jon's first action movie after series of dance related movies. Bruce Willis appears as Joe Colton a.k.a G. I Joe and Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock. This film supposed to be released in 2012 due to the release of "The Dark Knight Rises" and other factors, had to postpone the release date to 2013.

 

6. The Lone Ranger (2013)

The makeup/costume that Johnny Depp appears in the movie was inspired by Native American Artist Kirby Sattler's painting "I AM CROW". The epic scale and gun metal patina makes the film look visually stunning.
