Johnny Depp's Ten Most Unconventional Roles

Johnny Depp is one of the biggest name in Hollywood at present. He is an actor, producer, writer and musician. He is so versatile and talented as an actor and I cannot remember any other actor in the film industry who has done these many different characters on screen. He can adapt and portray to whatever role you throw at him, that too elegantly and perfectly.  I take this opportunity to rank Johnny Depp's top 10 best characters that I have witnessed on screen.

1. Captain Jack Sparrow

"This is the day you will always remember as the day you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow"

"Me? I’m dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It’s the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they’re going to do something incredibly… stupid."

"Jack Sparrow....There should be a "Captain" in there somewhere."

"Captain Jack Sparrow", one of the most famous characters portrayed by Johnny Depp. He's performance is one of his best ever as the slightly camp Captain Jack Sparrow. Even under his tangle of hair and blackened eyes, He will make you swoon and laugh both at the same time with his tunes of witty lines and mannerisms.

With a raspy Cockney English accent, and a sense of humor that's ahead of his time, it's a very memorable performance. No one in my opinion could have done the role better and I could probably find a better person for the role of just about every main role in a movie except this one.

2. Edward Scissorhands

"Kim: Hold me.
Edward: I can't."

"Edward lived alone where he could hurt no one and no one could hurt him. Until the day the Avon Lady came calling..."

"Edward Scissorhands", Johnny Depp's performance is one of his finest and, arguably, one of the most convincing and fun of all-time. Johnny Depp's first real leading role in a movie, he's so young and so incredibly talented. He plays Edward with perfect sympathy not over or under acting it, to be honest I'm a little surprised he wasn't nominated for an Oscar, but it's such a bizarre role, I think it was very over looked. He makes Edward into a charming beautiful character that you fall in love with.

3. Edward D. Wood, Jr.

"When It Came To Making Bad Movies, Ed Wood Was The Best."

Edward D. Wood, Jr.: This story's gonna grab people. It's about this guy, he's crazy about this girl, but he likes to wear dresses. Should he tell her? Should he not tell her? He's torn, Georgie. This is drama.

Ed Wood was another combo of Burton-Depp. "Edward D. Wood, Jr.", Johnny Depp is simply brilliant here, probably even better than he was in Pirates of the Caribbean. He captures Wood's enthusiasm and slanted viewpoint, but he does so in a loving, positive way. Wood accepts, as we must, that he was a screwed-up hack, but it never drags him down; in fact, Depp has him reveling in it, and it is that very passion that buoys up the movie.

4. Sweeney Todd

"Mrs. Lovett: You've got to put the past behind you now. What's dead is dead, and life is for the alive my dear. We could have a life, us two. Maybe not like I dreamed, maybe not like you remember, but we could get by."

"Mrs. Lovett: That's all very well, but what are we going to do about him? Hello? Can you hear me? Oh, you great useless thing."

"Sweeney Todd" is not an extraordinary character but Johnny's touch  perfect expression and elegant body language makes this whole movie worth watching.  And can Johnny Depp sing? And how! Not only does he sing Sondheim, and sing it well, but he creates a refreshingly new interpretation of this complex character, and does an amazing job acting the part through the singing, staying 100% in character and accent throughout. It's just fabulous to watch him portraying this role so flawlessly.

5. Sir James Matthew Barrie

"You find a glimmer of happiness in this world, there's always someone who wants to destroy it."

" Michael Llewelyn Davies: Excuse me, sir, you're standing on my sleeve.
J.M. Barrie: [moves his foot and looks down to face Michael] Am I? So sorry. I might point out you're lying under my bench. "

"Sir James Matthew Barrie", Johnny Depp does one of his best character performances ever, and with fine dialogs and fine poetic sentences threw the movie this can't do anything than be one big,  At this point, Johnny Depp has certainly come a long way in his career, and this role is certainly a demonstration of the nuance and emotional depth he can achieve in his performances now. Very dramatic serio-comedy with a large dose of imagination seems to be his specialty.

6. The Mad Hatter

" There is a place. Like no place on Earth. A land full of wonder, mystery, and danger! Some say to survive it: You need to be as mad as a hatter."

"Speak English! I don't know the meaning of half those long words, and I don't believe you do either!"

"I can't explain myself, I'm afraid, Sir, because I'm not myself you see"

"The Mad Hatter" is mixture of "Willy Wonka" and Depp's skills that's what i felt after watching it. Johnny Depp is actually quite restrained as the Mad Hatter...in a manner of speaking. He never goes so over the top that you can't connect with the character. He does, in fact, give the Hatter much more gravity and depth than you might expect from such a loon. His interaction/friendship with Alice helps ground the film (they're very loyal to each other). While he does have his wacky moments, he also has some quieter moments where you really get to see into the heart of his character

7. Willy Wonka

"Willy Wonka: You can't run a chocolate factory with a family hanging over you like an old, dead goose. No offense.

Grandpa George: None taken. Jerk."

"Everything in this room is edible. Even I'm edible. But, that would be called canibalism. It is looked down upon in most societies."

"Willy Wonka", Johnny Depp proposes another inventive and completely wacky interpretation here. Depp makes of Wonka a tormented and unadapted character who doesn't know much about common courtesy and doesn't really care anyway. He built up his own universe in response to his authoritarian father and he's pretty proud of it. Willy Wonka by Depp is portrayed as a high-pitched jerk. His clean and make-up heavy appearance is completely unattractive.

8. George Jung

"This is 100% pure Columbian cocaine, ladies and gentlemen. Disco shit. Pure as the driven snow. - George Jung"

"Sometimes you're flush and sometimes you're bust, and when you're up, it's never as good as it seems, and when you're down, you never think you'll be up again, but life goes on. - Fred Jung"

You can never underestimate this guy's talent. He can adapt to whatever role you throw at him. He's simply amazing. He's Johnny Depp for you. Johnny Depp proves once again what a triumphant, adaptable actor he can be. He portrays George Jung with the perfect amount of greed, style, confusion, pride, and desperation.

9. John Dillinger

" Melvin Purvis: What keeps you up nights, Mr. Dillinger?

John Dillinger: Coffee. "

" John Dillinger: I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars... and you. What else you need to know? "

Johnny Depp as "John Dillinger"  portrays role of  a notorious American gangstarJohnny Depp is as usual great, but you get a feeling he would have been even better if the script had given enough scope to explore the character of Dillinger.

10. Gilbert Grape

"Tucker: How's momma?
Gilbert: She's fat.
Tucker: Come on, man. She's not all that big, Gilbert.
Gilbert: What?
Tucker: Listen, I saw a guy at the state fair who was... a little bit bigger.
Gilbert: A little bit bigger?
Tucker: Look, all I'm sayin' is that she's not the biggest I ever seen, okay?
Gilbert: Tucker, she's a whale!
Tucker: Well, take her out for a walk once in a while.
Gilbert: Take her out for a jog!
Arnie: She's a whale! Tucker, she's a whale! "

Johnny Depp as "Gilbert Grape" was an outstanding and brilliant showcase of emotion and love. This movie also had Leonardo DiCaprio who did a great job and got Academy Nomination. It's a complete family entertainer with some lovely chemistry between mother and son. Trust me you will really love Grape's family from the core of your heart..
