A slasher film is a type of horror film typically involving a socially disturbed maniac and a psychopathic killer stalking and killing a sequence of victims in a graphically gore and violent manner, often with a cutting tool such as a knife or axe. Although the term "slasher" may be used as a generic term for any horror movie involving graphic acts of murder, the slasher as a genre has its own set of characteristics which set it apart from related genres like the splatter film. 10. No One Lives (May 10TH, 2003)

The story revolves around a gang of cold-blooded highway killers kidnap an apparently harmless couple (Luke Evans and America Olivo), they soon find out that they met their match - and then some!

The first two parts of the Hatchet franchise were directed by writer Adam Green (Hatchet Series, Frozen). For Hatchet 3 he personally hand-picked his director of photography BJ McDonnell to debut as a director.



7. Maniac (Jun 21ST, 2013)

When he meets the young artist Anna (Nora Arnezeder), a psychologically complex tale of horror ensues.

Maniac is a remake of William Lustig’s eponymous 1980s cult slasher. The script was co-written by and director Alexandre Aja.



6. You're Next (Aug 23RD, 2013)

Also present are family members and some close friends, all united in the sort of mean bickering which makes family celebrations such a dubious joy to attend to. When the house gets attacked by a group of murderous masked men however, dinner conversation becomes somewhat less important…

"You‘re Next" won the SCI FI Jury Award at the Gérardmer Film Festival. The darkly humorous slasher also came second in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto Film Festival 2011.

Director Oliver Blackburn brought us the clever, nasty thriller Donkey Punch.




4. Clown (2013)

Although writer/director Jon Watts is a newcomer to feature film-length directing, the movie still has an impressive pedigree behind it, with horror-movie maestro Eli Roth producing.

Filmmaker Steven R. Monroe was responsible for I Spit on Your Grave, the 2010 remake of the 1978 infamous rape and revenge classic by Meir Zarchi. He is back in the director’s seat for the sequel with a script written by genre expert Thomas H. Fenton (Saw IV).
