Preview: 10 Pieces Of Information About Brad Pitt's World War Z

"World War Z" is an upcoming 2013 apocalyptic zombie thriller film based on 2006's "World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War", a post-apocalyptic horror novel by Max Brooks. It is a follow-up to his 2003 book, "The Zombie Survival Guide." Similar in style to War Day by Whitley Strieber, World War Z was inspired by "The Good War," an oral history of World War II by Studs Terkel; and by the zombie films of George A. Romero. Brooks used World War Z to comment on government ineptitude and American isolationism, while also examining Survivalism and uncertainty.

The most reviews of Brooks’ book routinely mentioned its built-in cinematic allure. The raw material was all there. All Hollywood had to do was follow the manual and hire a filmmaker with some genre card. Just think of all the fantasmagoric flourish Sam Raimi, Guillermo Del Toro, or Joss Whedon might have brought to this project.

If you were producing “World War Z,” which filmmaker would you enlist to ensure victory?

10. A total of 85 machine guns, rifles and pistols to be used for filming scenes in Hungary were confiscated by counterterrorism customs officers in Budapest, Hungary after being flown in from London. The props, which are owned by an English company, were to be used in filming. The Hungarian authorities said the guns could be activated by simply removing screws filling the end of the barrels.

9. Hungarian law requires weapons to be deactivated only if the process of making them live is irreversible. Weapons supervisor, Bela Gajdos, on the movie commented that a permit for the weapons had been issued by Hungarian police. Reports claimed that main actor Brad Pitt was "furious" at the seizure but the producers have said it has not delayed filming.

8. In April 2010, Paramount Studios renewed its option on the movie rights. Filming finally commenced mid-2011. World War Z was initially slated for release by Paramount Pictures on December 21, 2012. In March 2012, the film's release was pushed back to June 21, 2013.

7. We cited the Paramount press release for our earlier report on the World War Z‘s release date, but it was other sites like /Film and Movies.com that first picked up on the bombshell packed in the film synopsis that came with Paramount’s announcement:

The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.

6. Paramount Pictures acquired screen rights to the Max Brooks novel "World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War." Brooks' follow-up to satire "The Zombie Survival Guide" sparked a bidding battle, with Warner Bros. And Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way on the other side of the table from Paramount and Brad Pitt's Plan B. Also, Ed Harris and 'Bryan Cranston (I)' were originally cast in the movie, but both dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.

Early screenings of "World War Z" for select audiences have produced some positive reviews - "It's everything you want in a blockbuster – smart, shifty, and scary as hell."

5. Filming took place in several areas of the UK including Cornwall, England where the UN control room scene was filmed alongside scenes on the Ministry of Defense Primary Casualty Receiving Facility (PCRF), RFA Argus (AS on the flight-deck). Filming also took place in Glasgow, Scotland to the streets made to look like those in Philadelphia with many American cars, trucks, taxis and street signage shipped in from the USA. Also filming took place in Valletta, Malta.

4. With a notably versatile range of films to his credit, Director Marc Forster has persistently evaded categorization, having helmed a slate of major motion pictures of varying scale and genres for studios and independents alike, starring many of the industry’s premier talent. He is best known for directing the films Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland, Stranger than Fiction, The Kite Runner and Quantum of Solace.

3. In the beginning of the trailer released in March 2013 while Brad Pitt's family is having breakfast the radio in the background mentions a flight which landed without permission before martial law is declared in Russia. This is likely the infamous (in zombie lore) Flight 575 which, after landing, disgorged its passengers which had all been turned.

2. In January 2012, director Marc Forster and Paramount Pictures said they "each view World War Z as a trilogy that would have the grounded, gun-metal realism of Matt Damon's Jason Bourne series tethered to the unsettling end-times vibe of AMC's The Walking Dead."

1. In June 2006, the movie rights for "World War Z" were secured by Paramount Studios for Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B Entertainment to produce. The screenplay was written by J. Michael Straczynski, with Marc Forster directing, and Pitt starring as the main character, UN employee Gerry Lane. Despite being the draft that got the film green-lit, Straczynski's script was tossed aside, so that production, which was to begin at the start of 2009, was delayed while the script was completely re-written by Matthew Michael Carnahan to set the movie in the present, leaving behind much of the premise of the book to make it more of an action film.
