"World War Z" is an upcoming 2013 apocalyptic zombie thriller film based on 2006's "World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War", a post-apocalyptic horror novel by Max Brooks. It is a follow-up to his 2003 book, "The Zombie Survival Guide." Similar in style to War Day by Whitley Strieber, World War Z was inspired by "The Good War," an oral history of World War II by Studs Terkel; and by the zombie films of George A. Romero. Brooks used World War Z to comment on government ineptitude and American isolationism, while also examining Survivalism and uncertainty.
If you were producing “World War Z,” which filmmaker would you enlist to ensure victory?
The most reviews of Brooks’ book routinely mentioned its built-in cinematic allure. The raw material was all there. All Hollywood had to do was follow the manual and hire a filmmaker with some genre card. Just think of all the fantasmagoric flourish Sam Raimi, Guillermo Del Toro, or Joss Whedon might have brought to this project.

A total of 85 machine guns, rifles and pistols to be used for filming scenes in Hungary were confiscated by counterterrorism customs officers in Budapest, Hungary after being flown in from London. The props, which are owned by an English company, were to be used in filming. The Hungarian authorities said the guns could be activated by simply removing screws filling the end of the barrels.

Brooks' follow-up to satire "The Zombie Survival Guide" sparked a bidding battle, with Warner Bros. And Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way on the other side of the table from Paramount and Brad Pitt's Plan B. Also, Ed Harris and 'Bryan Cranston (I)' were originally cast in the movie, but both dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.
Early screenings of "World War Z" for select audiences have produced some positive reviews - "It's everything you want in a blockbuster – smart, shifty, and scary as hell."

Filming also took place in Glasgow, Scotland to the streets made to look like those in Philadelphia with many American cars, trucks, taxis and street signage shipped in from the USA. Also filming took place in Valletta, Malta.

1. In June 2006, the movie rights for "World War Z" were secured by Paramount Studios for Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B Entertainment to produce. The screenplay was written by J. Michael Straczynski, with Marc Forster directing, and Pitt starring as the main character, UN employee Gerry Lane. Despite being the draft that got the film green-lit, Straczynski's script was tossed aside, so that production, which was to begin at the start of 2009, was delayed while the script was completely re-written by Matthew Michael Carnahan to set the movie in the present, leaving behind much of the premise of the book to make it more of an action film.
